ISO 8217

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

International standard for marine fuel oil specifications.

The international standard that specifies the quality of marine fuels, defining the grades from distillate (DMA, DMB) to residual (RMG 380, RMK 500) and their limits on viscosity, density, sulphur, water, ash, cat fines (aluminium plus silicon), and ignition quality. A bunker stem is ordered and tested against an ISO 8217 grade, and the lab certificate decides whether the delivered fuel is on specification. Off-spec fuel against the ordered ISO 8217 grade is the basis of most bunker-quality claims.
