KFC (Krill Fishery Concentration)

Krill fishery concentration is the management problem of fishing effort for Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) clustering in a few productive subareas of the Southern Ocean, near penguin and seal colonies. CCAMLR controls it through the trigger level for Area 48: a combined catch cap of 620,000 tonnes across Subareas 48.1 to 48.4, far below the estimated precautionary yield. Conservation Measure 51-07 spread that trigger across subareas (no more than 25% from 48.1, 45% from 48.2 and 48.3 combined, 15% from 48.4) to prevent over-concentration; it expired after the 2024 season, and the trigger was reached for the first time in 2025. The seed label KFC is garbled; the real concept is the CCAMLR krill trigger and its spatial distribution.
