Korean War Wrecks

F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and Museums

Definition

Underwater archaeological resource off the peninsula.

Vessels lost in the seas around the Korean peninsula during the 1950 to 1953 conflict, a class of 20th-century military wreck. Losses included the cruiser USS Magpie (sunk by mine, 1950) and several minesweepers off Wonsan, where mining was heavy. These sites are war graves and unexploded-ordnance hazards, surveyed but rarely excavated. They are managed as a heritage and salvage category rather than as a single excavated site.
