Lusitania Wreck Surveys
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Underwater investigations off Kinsale.
Survey and dive work on RMS Lusitania, the Cunard liner torpedoed by U-20 on 7 May 1915 off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, killing 1,198. The wreck lies at about 93 meters in Irish waters and is designated under Ireland’s National Monuments Acts. Robert Ballard surveyed it in 1993; later expeditions, including work backed by owner Gregg Bemis, examined the hull to test claims about a second internal explosion and any munitions in the cargo. The wreck’s collapsing state limits intrusive work.
