Lashing charges

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Charges for securing cargo on deck or in holds.

Lashing charges are the cost of securing cargo against the ship’s motion, the labor and materials for chains, wires, turnbuckles, twistlocks, web straps, and dunnage. On container ships the terminal bills lashing and unlashing per box or per move; on breakbulk and project cargo it is quoted as part of the stowage and securing scope. Under liner terms the owner absorbs lashing within the freight, while FIOST and free-in-free-out fixtures push it to the charterer. Securing must follow the ship’s approved Cargo Securing Manual, and inadequate lashing is a frequent cause of cargo shift and loss claims.
