Founded 1760, UK class and assurance organization.
Lloyd’s Register is a British classification society and assurance organization tracing to 1760, when the Register Society first published a register of merchant ships for marine underwriters at Lloyd’s coffee house in London. It is one of the founding members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). As a class society it develops rules for ship and offshore structure design, surveys ships in construction and service, and issues class and statutory certificates on behalf of flag administrations. The group operates as the Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s commercial arm, with charitable ownership directing surplus to safety research.
