Bangladesh Ship Recycling Rules 2011: Earlier rules under the Environment Conservation Act 1995 covering import permits and SRP submission for Chittagong yards.

Cash Buyer: Intermediary that purchases ships outright for cash and resells to recycling yards.
Cemas Demtas: Aliaga ship recycling plot historically EU-listed, operated by Cemas Denizcilik.
Certificate of Inventory of Hazardous Materials: International certificate under HKC Regulation 5 and Appendix 3.
Chemical Cleaning Certificate: Document issued by a chemist confirming tanks are gas-free and chemically cleaned for hot work, mandatory before HKC plot acceptance.
China Association of Metalscrap Utilization (CAMU): Industry body that historically tracked Chinese ship recycling, before the 2018 ban on imported scrap including end-of-life ships.
China National Ship Recycling Association (CNSA): Industry association historically representing Jiangyin Xiagang, Changjiang Ship Recycling, and other Yangtze-river yards.
Chittagong: Bangladesh ship recycling cluster on the Sitakunda coast north of Chittagong port.
Chittagong Port Authority: Statutory body administering port calls and outer anchorages used by ships destined for Sitakunda yards.
ClassNK: Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, Japanese classification society and IACS member, founded 1899.
Coastal Zone Regulation (CRZ) Notification 2011: Indian Ministry of Environment notification governing intertidal activities, applied to Alang under category III.
Competent Authority: Government authority designated under HKC or Basel Convention to administer recycling rules.
Continuous Survey of Hull: Class regime that ends at the final voyage; survival to demolition does not require continued CSH after deletion from class.
Crescent Shipping Lines: Bangladeshi shipping group with historical involvement in Chittagong recycling and feeder operations.
Cutting Map (Block Cutting Plan): Sequence diagram in the SRP showing cutting order from bow to stern with hazardous-material removal milestones.
Cutting Permit: Plot-level authorization issued by the GMB or SBSRB confirming gas-free certification and SRP approval before torch work begins.

DASR (Damaged Ship Recycling): Informal category for casualty vessels recycled under salvage contracts, typically routed to Aliaga, Brownsville, or specialized European yards.
Deadweight to LDT Ratio: Approximate conversion factor of 5:1 to 8:1 for bulkers and tankers, used by cash buyers to estimate LDT from published DWT.
Deletion from Register: Removal of the ship from the flag-state registry after recycling, evidenced by a certificate of deletion sent to the IMO via the GISIS Ship database.
Demolition Price (USD/LDT): Headline market price paid per light displacement ton, reported weekly by GMS, Clarksons, and Lloyd's List Intelligence.

E

Eco Wave Aliaga: Trade name occasionally used for Turkish HKC-compliant recyclers; not all Aliaga yards are EU-listed.
End-of-Life Vessel (EOL): Ship for which the owner has decided not to maintain class or trading certificates and intends to recycle.
ENI Class (Inland): European Number of Identification used for inland vessels; not directly within HKC scope which addresses sea-going ships of 500 GT and above.
ESCO Marine: Brownsville, Texas, ship recycler that historically dismantled US Navy and MARAD vessels; entered receivership in the mid-2010s.
EU List of Approved Ship Recycling Facilities: The European Commission published list of yards permitted to recycle EU-flagged vessels, comprising facilities in EU member states, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and India.
EU Ship Recycling Regulation 1257/2013: Regulation of the European Parliament and Council, in force 30 December 2013, with full owner obligations from 31 December 2018.
EU SRR Article 12: Requirements for facilities outside the EU to be included in the EU List, including HKC alignment and downstream waste management.
EU SRR Article 6: Owner obligations to send EU-flagged ships only to facilities on the EU List from 31 December 2018.
European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA): Industry body in Brussels.
Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) Wash Water Residue: Listed in IHM Part II for ships equipped with scrubbers, requires special handling at the recycling facility.

Facility Audit (HKC): Verification audit performed by a Recognized Organization confirming yard compliance with HKC Regulations 16 to 23.
Ferrous Resources (Alang): Plot operator at Alang historically holding HKC SoC; verifies via GMB plot register.
Final Survey: HKC survey under Regulation 10.4 prior to dismantling, leading to the IRRC.
Fire Watch: Continuous watch posted during hot work in adjacent and below compartments under HKC Regulation 22.
Flag of Convenience to Recycling: Common practice of switching to St Kitts and Nevis, Comoros, Palau, or Tuvalu flag for the last voyage to facilitate beaching.
Float-off Method: Final stage of beaching recycling where the lightened hull is refloated on a subsequent spring tide for further dismantling.

LDT Light Displacement Tonnage: Mass of the empty ship without fuel, ballast, stores, or cargo, the demolition pricing base.

Letter of Indemnity (LOI): Counter-promise to compensate for action taken at requester's request.

Petroleum Free Certificate: Variant of gas-free certificate confirming absence of hydrocarbon vapors above safe limits.
PHP Family: Bangladeshi conglomerate operating PHP Ship Recycling Industries at Sitakunda, the first Bangladeshi yard to obtain HKC SoC from a Class society (ClassNK SoC, 2019).
Plot Number System (Gadani): Numerical plot system at Gadani administered by the Balochistan Ports and Shipping Department, with plots numbered roughly 1 to 132.
