LNG Bunkering Vessel

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

Ship transferring LNG fuel to LNG-powered ships.

A small LNG carrier that delivers LNG fuel ship-to-ship to LNG-powered vessels, the cryogenic counterpart of a conventional bunker tanker. It transfers methane at about minus 162 degrees C through insulated hoses or hard arms with emergency release couplings, managing boil-off gas and cool-down of the receiving tanks. Capacities typically run 2,000 to 20,000 cubic meters. Class societies issue LNG-bunkering notations (ABS, DNV, BV), and operations follow the ISO 20519 standard for LNG bunkering of ships and the IGF Code on the receiving side.
