LNG Moss-Type Containment
E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleetsDefinition
Spherical Moss tanks.
An LNG containment system using self-supporting spherical tanks, usually 5083 aluminum alloy, mounted on a cylindrical skirt and free-standing inside the cargo hold; the tank carries its own load rather than transferring it to the hull. Developed by Norway’s Moss Maritime (Kvaerner-Moss), the design is an IGC Code independent Type B tank, which permits a partial secondary barrier (a drip tray and protective steel under the sphere) instead of a full one. The visible deck domes identify Moss carriers. They tolerate partial filling without the sloshing limits that constrain membrane tanks.
