Maneuvering Standard (MSC.137(76))
B1. Naval ArchitectureDefinition
IMO standard ship maneuverability criteria.
IMO Resolution MSC.137(76), adopted 4 December 2002, sets the Standards for Ship Manoeuvrability for ships of 100 m and over and all chemical tankers and gas carriers built on or after 1 January 2004. Trials run at a test speed of at least 90 percent of the speed at 85 percent MCR. Turning ability limits advance to 4.5 ship lengths and tactical diameter to 5 lengths at 35 degree rudder. Initial turning travel must stay under 2.5 lengths for a 10 degree heading change. The 10/10 zigzag first-overshoot limit depends on L/V, the 20/20 first-overshoot limit is 25 degrees, and full-astern track reach must not exceed 15 lengths.
