The International Maritime Organization is the UN specialized agency that sets global standards for the safety, security, and environmental performance of international shipping. It was founded by the 1948 Convention on the IMO (originally IMCO), which entered into force in 1958, and today has 176 Member States plus three Associate Members (the Faroe Islands, Hong Kong, and Macao). It works through the Assembly, the 40-member Council, and five committees (MSC, MEPC, LEG, TC, FAL), supported by seven sub-committees and a Secretariat at 4 Albert Embankment, London.
