MASS Code (Non-Mandatory 2026, Mandatory 2032 target)

The IMO goal-based code for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships, developed by the Maritime Safety Committee to govern Degree 1 to 4 MASS operations and the human role across SOLAS, COLREG, STCW, and related instruments. The MSC roadmap targets a non-mandatory MASS Code from 2026, with mandatory entry into force targeted for 1 January 2032. Until then, trials proceed under the interim guidelines in MSC.1/Circ.1604 (2019). The schedule is a target set by the MSC, not yet adopted text.
