MASS Degree 1

The lowest of the IMO’s four MASS degrees of autonomy: a ship with automated processes and decision support, but seafarers are on board to operate and control shipboard systems and functions. Some operations may run automated and at times unsupervised, with crew ready to take control. It contrasts with Degree 2 (remotely controlled, crew aboard), Degree 3 (remotely controlled, no crew aboard), and Degree 4 (fully autonomous, the ship decides and acts by itself).
