Methanol Fuel
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
Methanol (CH3OH) used as a marine fuel with potential for renewable production.
Methanol (CH3OH) is a liquid alternative marine fuel handled near ambient temperature, which makes storage and bunkering simpler than cryogenic LNG, ammonia, or hydrogen, though its low flash point and energy density (about half that of fuel oil) need larger tanks and IGF-Code safety measures. Fossil methanol cuts SOx and particulates but offers little CO2 benefit; green and bio-methanol cut well-to-wake CO2 sharply. Maersk and others have ordered large fleets of methanol dual-fuel container ships, making it a front-runner alternative fuel.
