IGF Code
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels.
The IGF Code sets safety requirements for ships using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels, mandatory under SOLAS Chapter II-1 Part G from 1 January 2017. It applies a goal-based, risk-assessed design to fuel storage, bunkering, fuel preparation, and gas-consuming machinery, with the explicit aim of equivalent safety to a conventional oil-fueled ship. Detailed provisions cover LNG; methanol, ethanol, and other fuels follow through interim guidelines pending Code amendments. It complements the IGC Code, which governs gas as cargo rather than fuel.
