Mixed cargo charter

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Charter allowing carriage of mixed commodities.

A mixed cargo charter is a charter party permitting the vessel to load more than one commodity on the same voyage, with the cargo clause naming the range of permitted goods and any segregation or quantity limits. It suits parcel tankers and multipurpose ships that carry several grades or commodities for one or more charterers in a single lifting. Freight may be a blended rate or set per parcel, and stowage, segregation, and cargo-compatibility responsibilities are spelled out to manage contamination risk. The clause widens the charterer’s optionality against a single-commodity charter.
