MR1/MR2

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

Product tanker subclasses 25k-45k / 45k-55k.

MR1 and MR2 split the Medium Range product tanker band into two tiers. An MR1 runs about 25,000 to 45,000 dwt, the smaller handy-product unit suited to shallower berths and shorter parcels; an MR2 runs about 45,000 to 55,000 dwt, the larger and far more common newbuilding standard for the clean-product trades. The MR2 is the dominant product-tanker order in shipyards because it matches the cargo lot sizes refineries ship and still fits most product berths. Both sit below the long-range LR1 and LR2 classes in the product ladder and above coastal tankers.
