MR (Medium Range) tanker
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
30,000-55,000 DWT product tanker.
An MR, Medium Range, tanker is the workhorse product tanker of about 25,000 to 55,000 dwt, carrying gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other clean products on regional and medium-haul legs. Coated cargo tanks and multiple segregations let an MR lift several grades at once and trade flexibly between refining centers and import terminals. The class sits below the long-range LR1 and LR2 tankers and above coastal tankers in the product ladder. A typical MR measures about 180 meters length overall and draws roughly 12 meters laden, shallow enough for most product berths that a Suezmax or VLCC cannot reach.
