NEAFC

The North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) is the RFMO for fishery resources in the high seas of the Northeast Atlantic (FAO Area 27), operating under a convention in force since 1982. It adopts management for shared and straddling pelagic and deep-sea stocks including Atlanto-Scandian (Norwegian spring-spawning) herring, blue whiting, mackerel, redfish, and deep-water species, setting total allowable catches, effort and area measures, and bottom-fishing closures that protect vulnerable marine ecosystems on Atlantic seamounts and ridges. NEAFC runs a scheme of control and enforcement with port state controls and a vessel monitoring system, drawing on ICES advice.
