NEMO
D1. Physical and chemical oceanography and marine meteorologyDefinition
Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, a widely used ocean general circulation model.
NEMO, the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, is an open-source ocean general circulation model used across European research and operational forecasting. It solves the primitive equations on a curvilinear Arakawa-C grid and couples an ocean dynamics-thermodynamics engine (OPA) with the SI3 sea-ice model and the TOP/PISCES biogeochemistry component. NEMO is the ocean core of the Copernicus Marine Service global and regional systems, of Mercator Ocean’s analyses and forecasts, and of the ocean component in coupled climate models such as those in the IPCC CMIP archive. It runs from coarse climate resolution to eddy-resolving grids near 1/12 degree.
