NIWA

NIWA is the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand’s Crown research institute for freshwater, marine, atmospheric, and climate science, established in 1992. It runs ocean and weather forecasting for the Southwest Pacific and Southern Ocean, operates research vessels and moorings, and maintains long climate and tide-gauge records around New Zealand. NIWA produces fisheries-stock assessments, coastal-hazard and storm-surge modeling, and operational marine forecasts for shipping in a region of severe Southern Ocean weather. Its bathymetric and oceanographic surveys support charting and Antarctic gateway operations.
