WCRP

D5. Coastal processes, sea-level, cryosphere and ocean observation science

Definition

World Climate Research Programme.

WCRP, the World Climate Research Programme, is the international body that coordinates climate research, established in 1980 and sponsored by the WMO, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, and the International Science Council. It organizes the major observational and modeling efforts behind climate assessment, including the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, CMIP, whose runs feed the IPCC reports, and core projects on the ocean, cryosphere, and sea level such as CLIVAR and CliC. WCRP set up the global ocean and climate observing frameworks that standardize Argo, altimetry, and reanalysis efforts. Its sea-level and ice projections inform coastal-hazard and long-range planning.
