Marine data interconnect standards.
The three generations of NMEA marine data interconnect standards. NMEA 0183 is the ASCII serial sentence protocol (single talker, many listeners, 4800 baud), standardized as IEC 61162-1. NMEA 2000 is the CAN-bus network (250 kbit/s, binary Parameter Group Numbers), based on SAE J1939 and standardized as IEC 61162-3. NMEA OneNet, published in 2020, carries NMEA 2000 PGNs over IPv6 Ethernet for high-bandwidth devices. Each newer layer raises bandwidth while keeping the underlying navigation data model.
