NMEA 2000

NMEA 2000 is the marine data network standard that replaces the point-to-point NMEA 0183 with a single multi-talker bus, built on the Controller Area Network (CAN) used in automotive systems. Devices share one backbone cable carrying both data and power, each transmitting binary messages identified by a Parameter Group Number, at 250 kbit/s, far faster than the 4800 baud of NMEA 0183. Any device can both send and receive, so a GNSS receiver, depth sounder, wind sensor, autopilot, and display plug into the same network and read each other without dedicated wiring. It underpins integrated bridge data sharing on modern vessels and pleasure craft alike.
