Noise Code

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Code on Noise Levels On Board Ships, mandatory under SOLAS II-1/3-12.

The Code on Noise Levels on Board Ships sets mandatory maximum noise limits for machinery spaces, control rooms, workshops, accommodation, and other spaces to protect seafarers’ hearing. It is mandatory under SOLAS II-1/3-12, with the Code adopted by resolution MSC.337(91) (30 November 2012), in force 1 July 2014. The Code applies to ships of 1,600 gross tonnage and above. It fixes limits such as 110 dB(A) in machinery spaces with hearing protection and lower ceilings for cabins and mess rooms, and requires a noise survey report kept on board. Existing ships may apply its provisions as far as reasonable and practicable.
