Definition

Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, ILO instrument with five titles.

The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, is the ILO instrument consolidating seafarers’ rights into a single treaty, in force 20 August 2013 and often called the fourth pillar of international maritime regulation alongside SOLAS, MARPOL, and STCW. Its five titles cover minimum requirements to work at sea, conditions of employment, accommodation and food, health protection and medical care, and compliance and enforcement. Ships of 500 GT and above on international voyages carry a Maritime Labour Certificate and a Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance, verified by flag and port states.
