OOI

The Ocean Observatories Initiative is an NSF-funded network of cabled and moored seafloor observatories that streams physical, chemical, geological, and biological measurements in near real time, fully operational since 2016. Its Regional Cabled Array runs electro-optical cable from Pacific City, Oregon, across the Juan de Fuca plate, with one branch reaching about 480 km west to Axial Seamount, an active mid-ocean-ridge volcano. The cable delivers high power and bandwidth to seafloor nodes and to full-water-column moorings up to 2,900 m deep, carrying instrumented wire crawlers. OOI data support work on internal waves, currents, seismicity, and air-sea exchange across coastal and blue-water sites.
