Operational area
C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineeringDefinition
Area planned for terminal handling operations.
The operational area is the part of a port master plan zoned for active cargo-handling and terminal operations: berths, quay aprons, storage yards, gates, internal roads, and rail. It is separated in the plan from administrative, logistics-park, and reserve or expansion land so that heavy traffic, noise, and security controls stay inside a defined boundary. Land take per berth follows the cargo type, so a container terminal needs roughly 20 to 40 hectares per berth for yard, gate, and circulation. Defining the operational area fixes the secured customs perimeter and protects future berth lines from incompatible development.
