Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Gate

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Automated terminal gate using camera/OCR.

An OCR gate is an automated terminal entry point where cameras and optical-character-recognition software read container ISO numbers, ISO size-type codes, IMO placards, truck plates, and chassis IDs as a vehicle passes, removing manual clerking and damage inspection at the gate. The system cross-checks the read against the booking in the terminal operating system, captures a 360-degree damage image set, and raises an exception only when data does not match. OCR portals cut gate dwell time and feed the automated terminal’s container-tracking record, working alongside RFID and weigh-in-motion at the landside interface.
