Reefer Telematics
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
Remote monitoring of refrigerated containers.
Reefer telematics is the remote monitoring and control of refrigerated containers, transmitting setpoint, supply and return air temperature, humidity, controlled-atmosphere gas levels, power status, and alarms over cellular, satellite, or onboard power-line and wireless links to a shore dashboard. It lets a single operator watch hundreds of boxes, intervene on a temperature excursion before cargo loss, and prove the cold chain for perishables and pharmaceuticals. Onboard, the data routes through ship power-management and a gateway rather than constant satcom; the function reduces the manual reefer-round labor and the spoilage claims that drive perishable-cargo disputes.
