Optimization (Voyage)
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
Routing and trim optimization for fuel savings.
Voyage optimization plans speed, route, and trim across a passage to cut fuel and emissions while holding the arrival window. Weather routing steers around adverse wind, current, and sea state; speed optimization exploits the cubic speed-fuel relationship so trimming a few knots yields outsized savings; trim optimization finds the draft distribution that minimizes hull resistance for the loaded condition. Just-in-time arrival removes the wasteful pattern of steaming hard then idling at anchor. These measures feed the operational side of the Carbon Intensity Indicator under MARPOL Annex VI and are logged as actions in the SEEMP Part III.
