Voyage Optimization Software

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Routing and trim software reducing fuel use.

Voyage optimization software computes the route, speed profile, and trim that minimize fuel and emissions for a passage subject to an arrival window and weather. It fuses metocean forecasts, the vessel’s hull and engine performance curves, and live position and noon-report data to solve for least-cost or least-emission paths, then updates as conditions change. The output supports CII management under MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 4 and feeds the operational efficiency record in the SEEMP. Vendors include StormGeo, NAPA Voyage Optimization, and DTN, but the underlying model is the same: cube-law speed sensitivity against forecast resistance.
