Panaman lock fit

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Vessel that can transit the original Panama Canal.

Panaman lock fit is a garbled form of Panamax, a vessel sized to transit the original Panama Canal locks. The original locks set the limits the design works to: 294.13 m length overall, 32.31 m beam, and about 12.04 m draft in tropical fresh water, the beam being the binding constraint. A bulk carrier of about 65,000 to 80,000 dwt fills this envelope. The 2016 expansion added the Neopanamax locks for ships up to 366 m by 51.25 m by 15.2 m, so Panamax now denotes the smaller class that still uses the original locks rather than the expanded ones.
