Panamax
C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and financeDefinition
Dry bulk or container vessel sized for the original Panama Canal locks.
A dry-bulk or container vessel sized to the original Panama Canal locks, around 65,000 to 80,000 dwt in bulk, with beam limited to about 32.3 metres. Panamaxes carry coal, grain, and minor bulks on routes where their size matches loading and discharging port constraints. The 2016 canal expansion created the larger Neopanamax class; vessels too large for the old locks but suited to the new ones reshaped the segment definitions.
