Penobscot Marine Museum
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Maine institution covering coastal trade and shipbuilding.
Maine’s oldest maritime museum, founded in 1936 at Searsport on Penobscot Bay, a town that supplied a large share of American deep-water shipmasters in the 19th century. It occupies a campus of historic sea-captains’ houses and holds marine paintings, ship models, navigation instruments, and a large photographic archive documenting Maine’s coasting trade, shipbuilding, and the lime and granite cargoes carried by Penobscot Bay schooners.
