PIANC WG145

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

Berthing velocities and fender design report.

PIANC WG145 is the Maritime Navigation Commission Working Group whose report, released in 2022, collected and analyzed berthing velocities of seagoing vessels over 30,000 DWT to update design guidance for berthing energy and fenders. It assembled measured approach-velocity data across vessel sizes and berth types, then derived recommended design berthing velocities to replace the older Brolsma curves long carried in the WG33 fender guidance. The work feeds directly into the berthing-energy half-mvE squared calculation and into the partial-factor approach of the WG211 fender guidelines. Engineers cite WG145 when justifying design approach velocity for a specific terminal.
