PIANC
C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineeringDefinition
World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.
PIANC is the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure, a non-political international technical body founded in 1885 that publishes the design and operation guidance most used for ports, navigation channels, inland waterways, and marinas. Its work is organized through commissions, chiefly the Maritime Navigation Commission (MarCom) and Inland Navigation Commission (InCom), which charter numbered Working Groups whose reports become reference standards. Widely cited examples include WG145 on berthing velocities, WG165 on container terminal pavements, and WG211 on fender system design. Port engineers pair PIANC reports with national codes such as BS 6349 and the Spanish ROM series.
