Officer training establishment.

The officer-training academy of the Portuguese Navy, Escola Naval, at Alfeite within the Lisbon Naval Base on the south bank of the Tagus opposite Lisbon. Created in the 18th century as the Royal Academy of Midshipmen, reorganized in 1845 as the Escola Naval, and moved to Alfeite in 1936, it awards university and polytechnic master’s degrees that commission Portuguese naval officers in branches including seamanship, naval mechanical engineering, weapons and electronics, naval administration, and marines. Some postgraduate courses are open to civilians.
