Pre-fixture survey

A pre-fixture survey is an inspection of a vessel before a charterer commits to a fixture, checking that the ship is suitable, in class, and fit for the intended cargo and trade. Oil majors run vetting inspections to SIRE standards before accepting a tanker; dry bulk charterers and their P&I clubs run condition surveys covering hatches, holds, cargo gear, and class status. The findings drive the decision to fix and any conditions attached. A clean survey supports the owner’s warranty of seaworthiness and cargoworthiness, while defects can lose the fixture or force repairs before laydays.
