Punic Wreck of Marsala
F2. Maritime Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, Art and MuseumsDefinition
Phoenician warship excavated by Honor Frost.
A Carthaginian (Punic) warship wrecked off Marsala (ancient Lilybaeum), western Sicily, dated to about 235 BC, near the end of the First Punic War (264 to 241 BC). Found and excavated from 1971 by Honor Frost, the hull preserved shipwright’s assembly marks in Punic letters, evidence of standardized series construction. It is one of very few ancient warships recovered, as opposed to merchantmen. The remains are conserved at the Baglio Anselmi museum in Marsala.
