Quayside Welfare Centre

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

Mission to Seafarers facility.

A quayside welfare centre is a shore facility near a berth where visiting seafarers can rest, access internet and phones, exchange currency, buy supplies, and meet chaplains or welfare staff during short port calls. The Mission to Seafarers, Stella Maris, and the Sailors’ Society run such centers, often called seafarers’ centres or seafarer missions. They support the right of shore leave protected under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, Regulation 4.4, which obliges flag and port states to provide access to welfare facilities ashore.
