Quick-Closing Valve

F5. The Reference Layer: Glossary, Units, Signals and Information Sources

Definition

Engine-room safety valve required by SOLAS.

A quick-closing valve is a remotely operated shut-off valve fitted to fuel-oil, lubricating-oil, and other flammable-liquid tank outlets so the supply can be cut from a safe position outside the space in a fire or emergency. SOLAS Chapter II-2 Regulation 4 requires that valves on tanks containing oil fuel, lubricating oil, or other flammable oils be capable of being closed from a position outside the space, which stays accessible if a fire breaks out within that space. Closure is typically by spring-loaded wire, pneumatic, or hydraulic remote actuation.
