Quincy Shipbuilding Heritage

The shipbuilding legacy of Quincy, Massachusetts, centered on the Fore River Shipyard, which built warships and liners from 1900 under Fore River Ship and Engine, then Bethlehem Steel, closing in 1986. Its launches include the heavy cruisers USS Quincy (CA-39) and the carrier USS Lexington (CV-2). The United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum was founded there in 1993 and is home to the preserved heavy cruiser USS Salem (CA-139), the only surviving Des Moines-class cruiser.
