Quoddy Boat
F1. Maritime HistoryDefinition
Maine and New Brunswick fishing sloop type.
A Quoddy boat is a small fishing sloop or schooner of the Passamaquoddy Bay region straddling eastern Maine and New Brunswick, in use from the mid-19th into the early 20th century. Typically 25 to 35 feet, double-ended or with a fine transom and a low rig, it was worked by one or two men for the inshore herring, cod, and sardine fishery in the bay’s strong tides. The type’s name comes from Passamaquoddy Bay; engines later displaced its sail.
