Quoddy Heritage

The fishing and boatbuilding heritage of the Passamaquoddy Bay and Quoddy region straddling eastern Maine and New Brunswick. It is associated with the Passamaquoddy people, weir and sardine fishing, and the Quoddy Pilot Boat, a small auxiliary working sailboat type. The region was the site of Franklin Roosevelt’s 1935 Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project, an unfinished federal scheme to harness the bay’s large tidal range. Eastport and Lubec, the easternmost towns in the United States, anchor the area’s sardine-cannery and fishing history.
