Vibration-isolating engine mount.
A resilient mount is an elastic engine or machinery support, usually a steel-reinforced rubber or a steel-spring element, fitted between a machine and its seat to break the structural path that carries vibration into the hull. Compared with rigid chocking, resilient mounts cut structure-borne noise and shield the foundation from cyclic engine forces, at the cost of allowing the machine to move, which needs flexible pipe and cable connections and a flexible coupling in the drive. Generator sets, pumps, and compressors are common applications; on warships and research vessels low-noise resilient mounting is used to reduce radiated underwater noise. The mount’s natural frequency is tuned below the lowest forcing frequency.
