RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin)
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
EU category covering green hydrogen-derived fuels.
Renewable fuels of non-biological origin are the EU category for fuels made from renewable electricity rather than biomass, principally green hydrogen and the e-fuels synthesized from it (e-ammonia, e-methanol, e-methane). To count as an RFNBO under the Renewable Energy Directive the hydrogen must come from additional renewable power with strict temporal and geographic correlation. FuelEU Maritime gives RFNBOs a multiplier reward to bridge their cost gap against fossil fuels in the early years.
