Fuel EU Maritime
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
EU regulation limiting GHG intensity of marine fuels from 2025.
FuelEU Maritime is the EU regulation, applying from 1 January 2025, that caps the greenhouse-gas intensity of energy used onboard ships above 5,000 GT calling at EU ports, on a well-to-wake basis. The limit starts at a 2% cut versus a 2020 baseline and tightens to 80% by 2050, with penalties for non-compliance and provisions for pooling and banking. It complements the EU ETS, which prices the carbon, by setting a declining intensity standard that favors renewable and low-carbon fuels.
