ROM 3.1-99

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

Spanish maritime works recommendation for design of maritime navigation channels.

ROM 3.1-99 is the Spanish Recommendation for the design of the maritime configuration of ports, approach channels, and harbour basins, published by Puertos del Estado. It fixes geometric and operational criteria for channel width and depth, turning circles, stopping distances, and basin layout, using port operability and safety as the design basis to guarantee minimum navigation and manoeuvring conditions. Its channel-width and depth method differs from the PIANC approach-channel guidance, and the two are often compared on the same project. ROM 3.1-99 is widely used beyond Spain, in South America and the Caribbean, for channel and harbor-basin design.
