Route monitoring (ECDIS)

Route monitoring is the ECDIS mode used while the ship is underway on a planned route, displaying own ship against the monitored route and raising alarms as it approaches danger. With a route activated, the ECDIS shows the planned track, the cross-track limit channel on either side, and the ship’s position from GNSS, and it warns before the ship reaches the wheelover point, before crossing the safety contour, before standing into a no-go area, and when cross-track error exceeds the set limit. It is the counterpart to route planning, where the navigator builds and checks the route. Under SOLAS V/19 it is the working display for keeping the ship on its safe water.
